YARGOS
“To Be Or Not To Be”
(AFM – provided by Target)
- 2˝ out of 5 points –
Threshold singer Mac is apparently keeping himself busy with a little side-project here. Fair enough, considering that the other guys in Threshold also find time to do other stuff (Karl Groom has his own studio and is often involved in production of other bands, etc.). Well, Yargos is a strange release, that falls somewhere between standard heavy rock and a bit of prog. I know AFM labels this solely as prog-rock, but I don’t really agree with that describtion. Sure, there’s a good deal of Yes, Kansas and Pink Floyd worship going on here – especially when the tunes drag out – but overall the feeling is more of a laid-back metal band with a prog-metal touch to it. Kind of along the lines of Vanden Plas (yes, they bored the hell outta me except for “The God Thing”) or even Masterplan (although with less intensity and metal-attitude). It’s an extremely “safe” release, in the sense that it doesn’t surprise and it sure as hell won’t offend anyone. It’s actually too safe, just on the verge of boring. But yeah, the musicianship is good, and Mac is quite an okay singer.
