LIPID INTERVIEW |
Lipid is the latest thrash metal hope to come out Denmark, and with only two albums out so far it sounds promising. I really like their latest effort "Deliver Us From Evil" which takes the old school thrash and adds a modern production. I am big thrash fan myself, and so I thought it would be interesting to ask the drummer Martin Pedersen a few things. Here is what he said.

First off, let me congratulate you with a great album that makes me feel proud to be a Dane. "Deliver Us From Evil" is my first encounter with Lipid, but I understand you have been around for quite some time, so I am curious about your previous efforts. Tell me how they compare to the new one etc?
"I think that they more or less match the old demos, and our 1. full length Hagridden (2003) very good. Hagridden was mixture of both slow and fast songs and so is D.U.F.E."
How did you guys get together?
"Me and my brother (Søren) played in 2 different bands back then, and both of us felt it was the right time to skip those bands in order to play some more aggressive music....so we did..."
As a big thrash fan I am a bit curious as to what your influences are. I hear some Bay Area thrash along with some Invocator. I hope I am not totally off here…
"No man that's ok...I mostly listen to metal records from like 1983 to 1991 so my influences are mostly bands from that piece of time and I still think today that those years was the highlight of metal. I could mention a few: priest, wasp, testament, anthrax, King diamond, slayer."
What is the greatest force for Lipid and the "Deliver Us From Evil" album in your eyes.
"We still manage to play very fast and slow. I also think that we have some very melodic parts in there as well. This is a thrash fans wet dream come true. ( I hope.. hahaha)"
Do you feel the album is perfect? If not, what should be different?
"Its fine enough with me......"
The 2 Hansen's once again delivers an awesome sound, and I think the sound is very tight. How long did it take for you to record the whole thing?
"In total we have been in the studio for 10 days. 5 Days at Jacob place, and 5 days with Tommy."
What is your favourite song from the new album?
"Probably the title track..."
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Do you have any plans or goals for the future of Lipid? If yes, which?
"As im writing this, copro is trying to book us a UK tour in 2007. We are also playing shows in germany as well, but at this time I dont have anything confirmed yet."
Your music is very riff based, is this because one of you writes the basic riff, and then you just build the song from that? Or does the songwriting process work in any other way?
"Sometimes its like magic you know...suddenly this killer riff blows out of the amplifier...and sometimes we just jam a riff or 2 and see what happens."
I understand you have toured with Zyklon in the UK , how were you received over there?
"Very very nice. I especially remember the crowd at "The Underworld" in London . The place was packed wall to wall with some crazy metal people, who gave us all the response that we came for. That show was worth travelling for. I hope that we play London again on the tour."
Besides your very thorough Danish tour, are there any tours/gigs on the drawing board?
"Only what I mentioned before + a handful of Danish gigs which all are confirmed. See them all at our homepage. Lipid-online.com."
I always combine thrash with partying music. Do you get drunk a lot? If yes, with what?
"You got it sailor....we drink all kinds of shit, but mostly snaps and beers."
That was about all I wanted to ask you. The last words are yours, so feel free to add whatever you want.
"Go and visit us at: www.lipid-online.com there is a link to our Myspace site. Here you can be blessed with some of the new tracks. See you all on the road in 2007 and stay heavy."
