KARMAKANIC INTERVIEW, 2003 |
Sweden is apparently the most busy country in the world when it comes to progressive rock and metal projects - it seems like every other Swedish musician is involved in 5-10 different projects at once, and with KARMAKANIC yet another of those bands are at hand, featuring musicians from Flower Kings, Karma, Malmsteen, etc etc etc... Here is a short interview w Jonas Reingold ;

What is your opinion of your debut album with Karmakanic? I am thinking of production, lyrics, musical style - those kind of things.
"I think the album sounds good and has a nice flavor, the musicianship is stellar and the songs are good. But as a songwriter and producer I'm not totally satisfied cause you can always improve on different things."
What have been the reactions on the album so far? Do/did the audience and critics expect just another Flower Kings album, but with a different name? And why name the band "Karmakanic" anyway - what's the meaning of it?
"We had great reviews so far so its looking very good to us. Karmakanic is a play on words Karma Car mechanic etc. etc. It sounded good so I picked it up."
Why start a band like Karmakanic, when most of you are already in a band like The Flower Kings? I mean, isn't The Flower Kings challenging enough anymore?
"I love playing in The Flower Kings. But I also love writing songs, and Roine is the main composer in the Kings so this is my field to play on."
You had wellknown vocalist Göran Edman to sing on the disc, and it's quite clear that he still is a fantastic singer, but why did you find him a natural choice for this album? After all, he has usually been associated with melodic hard rock such as Malmsteen or Glory, and not such progressive rock as this…
"I did a Hard rock album with Goran a couple of years ago. His singing and performance amazed me so he was in the back of my head when I wrote the Karmakanic album."
Tell me a bit about the concept of Entering the Spectra.
"It's 3000 years ahead of time and the scientist has found documents regarding this little man who's living his life in something they called the Internet. We follow this little man on his journey through life."
Where did you find the inspiration to write a conceptual album like Entering the Spectra? And why do a conceptual album in the first place?
"It's was not my intention at first to do a concept album, but the song structure and lyrics was close so it became a concept. I getting inspired by classical music, the structure is similar and it is a good way to get in to a creative mood."
Do you have a common theme in the individual songs, or is it different and random from song to song?
"I have several themes running in and out of the songs, but its tricky to discover. If you listening a houndred times to the CD you will find new things."
Any plans of going on tour with Karmakanic, and if so, will you visit Denmark?
"That's my intentions..."
What are your future plans and expectations for Karmakanic?
"We will record a new CD and hopefully go on tour in the summer."
