FALCONER INTERVIEW |
Swedish power metal band Falconer made their big breakthrough last year with the exciting self-titled debut album, which showcased not only a real power act, but also a band deeply in touch with their roots. Falconer succeeded in blending hard hitting riffs and melodies in the Blind Guardian and Iced Earth vein with true Swedish folk music like heard several hundred years ago. With the new album "Chapters From A Vale Forlorn" playing on my stereo, I wouldn't miss the opportunity to speak to bandleader and guitarist Stefan;

What is your own opinion of the new album??
"Hmmm I think it is more varied then the first album, less power metal but a bit better I believe. For me the new album is more interesting to listen to, because the songs are more different from each other."
What are your expectations for this year to come?
"I hope that the album will do very well at least more then the first! I think that the first was more of a shock for people because of the originality I doubt the second want get the same attention, because it sounds a bit more of the first."
Do you believe that the new album is a repeat of the first album?
"No! Not many people believe that, because many people who have said to me that they need to listen more to the album to get into it. The problem for many is properly that they can hear that it is the same songwriter, which of course is hard to do variations upon. But I'm not trying to change but of course I will with time somehow. It will be a development of myself mostly to do the change."
How can it be that the album isn't a good produced as the first??
"Well actually I haven't noticed myself!!"
Well, in the first song it sounds like Mathias voice drowns a bit in the drums and bass??
"Yes that is true we actually have a bit problems with the vocals so we turned down the volume, and perhaps we turned it too much down."
What does it means for you to have a singer like Mathias Blad in the band?
"For us it means that our identity is been created by Mathias's vocals."
Does Mathias feel sorry that he has become the trademark of Falconer???
"No not really, because I think when we get the reactions it is because of the vocals and the music, bur again it is a big plus for the band."
How did you feel about the reaction about the first album?
"We didn't know how the reaction was, but the interest just grew and grew, it became better and better, so we were a bit surprised, because we didn't feel we had enough talent to have that kind of responds. But yes I can only thank the media for that kind of response."
When do expect to be touring???
"We told Metal Blade that we only cold be touring in April, they said ok but we haven't heard anything yet! The reason for us to pick up April was mainly because Mathias has a musical the rest of the year."
What about the extra musicians
"Yes we have two session members to help us out with the tour, and we have only rehearsed one time and it when on really great."
Is it anyone we know.
"No the guitarplayer has played in Swedish band called "Drævlerne?" None of them has been playing in a metal band, but they listen a lot to it. They love Falconer, so they love to play along with us."
