DREAM EVIL
INTERVIEW, 2003

Sweden's DREAM EVIL have just unleashed their second album ... another cliché-filled heavy metal disc with not much innovation or attempts at being unique. Nevertheless, this disc kicks ass, and is one of the best "true metal" (damn, I hate that phrase!) in the last couple of years. Guitarist Gus G (who actually is the only one in the band who ain't Swedish, hmmmm...) replied to my questions;

Interview by Claus Jensen
1. Congratulations on the new disc - it is really cool. To my ears, this is how REAL heavy metal should sound like. What is REAL heavy metal to YOUR ears?

"I would define REAL metal with loud drums, loud guitars, monster riffs, great vocals and great vocal melodies, great solos and awesome productions. That's my definition of great Heavy Metal, so if we sound like that to you, then thank you very much! I'm happy. :) "

2. What's the main difference between your 2 albums? The way I hear it, there aren't really no difference (not meant in a bad way of course) :-)

"Well, one big difference is that on this album we don't have lyrics about dragons and kings. The lyrics are more reallistic this time. I will agree with you that the music is pretty much in the same style of the debut CD."

3. Is Dream Evil a "band" or a "project"? All of you are doing other things, besides DE, what is the main priority?

"Well, all of us have other important things in our lives too. Dream Evil is certainly a priority of ours, but some of us also have other bands as well, that are also very important. "

4. The metal scene these days are getting over-flowed with project band instead of real constellations - what is your opinion on that? Especially in Sweden it seems like every musician has 2-3 bands.

"Yeah, it seems like that. I guess one thing people need to understand is that musicians sometimes need to express themselves differently and that's probably the reason because they have 2 or 3 bands."

5. Your music is quite cliché (typical 80's heavy metal with good melodies and sing-along-choruses) and your lyrics are also cliché ("heavy metal in the night", "made of metal", "break the chains" etc) ... why? Is it a FUN thing, or are you being serious about it?

"It's more of a fun thing. We could never be dead serious about that stuff. I mean we're trying to show the people a good time, and not tell them to pick up a sword and kill people haha!!! However, there are a lot of cool messages through our lyrics too. For instance, the song Break The Chains, is a song about freedom,which is something very important."

6. I think in many ways I would compare you to Lost Horizon;
- Swedish band
- Power metal
- Strong 80's feeling
- Cliché lyrics
- Just released 2nd album
Do you agree with that comparison?

"Your comparisons are sort of out of focus I would say. You're just looking at the surface. First of all, I think Lost Horizon are total dead serious about their lyrics, as they don't contain humourus lines, like we do. Also, I wouldn't consider any of the 2 bands power metal! We are more hard n' heavy, I would say. I just agree with you on the 80's feeling and the 2 brand new releases."

7. Do you think the market for this kind of music has reached its "top-limit"? And where can the metal (true metal, real heavy metal) bands take their music next, if they want to keep selling albums?

"It's hard to say what will happen in the future in this type of market. It looks like power metal and true metal is selling a lot these days, but I guess sales are going down in a general scale. I think the world of metal needs something fresh, but that will be very hard to be achieved. Although we play a cliche style, we try to remain fresh in our productions."

8. You're currently on tour with Masterplan and Hammerfall (quite the logic choice of a tour for you, huh?) ... what can the fans expect to see in a Dream Evil show?

"They can expect a great energetic and intense show from us. We'll give our 110%!!! We're very excited about the tour!"

9. Anything you'd like to tell us?

"Thanx for the support, stay true to your dreams, follow them.....and Stay Evil!!!"
